A volunteer committee is hard at work planning Port St. Lucie’s 50th anniversary celebration. The city’s "birthday logo" will be unveiled May 1, 2010 and will be used on all city letterhead and in other locations throughout the year, leading up to the kick-off of the city’s jubilee activities on Sunday, April 24, 2011.
Special events are being planned throughout the city for a full week in honor of this important milestone in our history, but residents and visitors will have various opportunities to celebrate this special birthday throughout the year.
The Anniversary Committee is seeking the public’s help in locating photographs of Port St. Lucie public or commercial buildings built in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as photographs of community events that took place during those decades. In addition, the committee is seeking any artifacts, newspaper articles or other memorabilia that would depict the history and growth of Port St. Lucie over the last 50 years. Any resident in possession of such photographs or memorabilia who is willing to donate them for the anniversary celebrations is asked to contact the Port St. Lucie Historical Society at (772) 337-5698. If desired, the Historical Society will scan the photographs and return the originals to the owners.
As part of the anniversary, a wonderful book detailing the city’s history, entitled "Port St. Lucie at 50: A City for All Ages," will soon be available. Written by Nina Baranski, former director of the city’s Community Relations Department (now known as the Communications Department), in collaboration with the Port St. Lucie Historical Society, the book is being underwritten by Riverside National Bank, Core Communities and Johnson Brothers Corporation. The historical society is currently taking orders for limited, signed editions of the book for the price of $49.99 plus tax (copies that are not limited, signed editions will be sold at the price of $39.99 plus tax). To order your advance copy, e-mail email@example.com, or call the Port St. Lucie Historical Society at (772) 337-5698.
